Strategies Training: A Call To Action: Building Protective Factors to Strengthen Military Families

Strategies Training: A Call To Action: Building Protective Factors to Strengthen Military Families

May 9, 2013
8:00am to 4:00pm
Courtyard Marriott - Old Town, 2435 Jefferson Street, San Diego, CA 92110

With the drawdown of troops, our military families are making the transition into civilian communities. Many military families live far from base and could benefit from services and supports in your local community.
In California, our mission to strengthen families through evidence-based research and practice includes families affected by the challenges of military life, including deployment, injury, reintegration, and other life transitions.

We can engage in supportive relationships with military families to enhance resilience and build additional protective factors in their lives.

In partnership with FOCUS, a program of the UCLA Nathanson Family Resiliency Center, we present an introductory training that will help staff and community organizations:

• Increase knowledge of military family experiences
• Promote protective factors and build resiliency skills in the context of a parent’s current or previous military service
• Apply current best practices with military families using a culturally proficient approach
• Strengthen network connections to increase resources among local military and veteran providers and social service organizations

DCoE Webinar: Psychological Health Issues in the National Guard and Reserves: Prevalence, Barriers and Treatment

DCoE Webinar: Psychological Health Issues in the National Guard and Reserves: Prevalence, Barriers and Treatment

May 16, 2013
1:00pm to 2:30pm

Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCoE) will host its next webinar, “Psychological Health Issues in the National Guard and Reserves: Prevalence, Barriers and Treatment,” from 1 to 2:30 p.m. (EDT) May 16.

Reserve components play a vital role in our nation’s defenses, with more than 123,000 members activated in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. They face many challenges active-duty service members do not. For example, reserve component members frequently transition between military and civilian life, requiring them to balance the demands of both. And, research has suggested that reserve component members may have different physical and psychological health concerns compared to active service members.

This webinar will:

  • Examine the various psychological health problems experienced by reserve components
  • Identify challenges facing reserve components to accessing care
  • Present treatment recommendations for working with reserve components

Featured speaker:

  • M. Tracie Shea, Ph.D.
Brown University Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior professor; Veterans Administration Hospital, Providence, R.I., Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Clinic psychologist

All professionals who care for service members are encouraged to attend, including service members and their families. Register now or review further information. Continuing education credit is available from Saint Louis University School of Medicine. The awarding of continuing education credit is limited in scope to health care providers who actively provide psychological health and traumatic brain injury care to active-duty service members, reservists, National Guardsmen, military veterans and/or their families. Please note: Registration will close at 11:59 p.m. (EDT) May 13. Register before the deadline to be eligible to receive continuing education credit for attending this webinar.
