News Medical recently featured the NFRC’s Tom Babayan, LMFT, in an article about parents with PTSD. The article emphasizes how important it is for parents to speak to their children, in a developmentally appropriate way, about the effect that PTSD has on their behavior. Conversations explaining why mom or dad sometimes acts the way that they do will lower the probability that children will blame themselves for any PTSD-related behavior they may see. While you don’t need to share specifics about the source of the trauma itself, make sure to let children know that it is not their fault. Tom Babayan acknowledges that these conversations can be difficult, and provides strategies, suggestions, and kid-friendly statements to use during these talks.
